Story

The story

Sierra Harrington, the long-lost heir brought home from the foster system, owes her life to Kate, the family's cherished daughter, who signed organ donation papers and saved her. The surgery succeeded, but Kate was destroyed by complications and depression, and the Harrington estate grew cold. Mother Eleanor weeps, Father Richard sighs, and Paul's icy glare reminds Sierra that her survival is a glaring accusation. Every breath she takes seems to steal the light from Kate.

Now Sierra sits in a hospital corridor, gripping her own organ donation form. She asks a tired doctor to give everything viable to Kate after she passes, then agrees to a surgery that might still offer a glimmer of hope. Her phone rings with her mother's invitation to dinner and Paul's cold warning to stay away, followed by a fifty-thousand-dollar transfer from her father.

Back in her sparse apartment, Sierra hides the consent form beside Kate's old agreement. Two contracts, two sacrifices, two destinies swapping places. A soul saved by an angel, she believes, does not deserve the sun.

Opening excerpt

They called Kate an angel. When I, the long-lost heir, was dying, she saved me. No one knew she’d signed the organ donation papers. The surgery worked; I lived. But Kate was destroyed. Complications and depression consumed her, and she withered away.

The house grew cold. Mother wept constantly; Father’s sighs deepened. I became the unwelcome ghost in the Harrington estate, my survival a glaring accusation. Then I heard Father’s choked confession: "We saved Sierra, but it cost Kate everything. What is the point of Sierra even being alive?"
