Story

The story

Aurelia, Crown Princess of Eldoria and her father's only child, must choose a Prince Consort from the Four Lords of Eldoria, sons of the Four Great Houses raised at court for her. Her heart belongs to Lord Kaelan, but he has given his to another. Leaving her fate to the God, she draws a lot and gets Lord Lysander, the most unreliable of them all.

When Kaelan begs her not to leave him, she lets him believe she has chosen him, and he turns his bitterness on her. After Lady Seraphine's staged fall, Kaelan accuses Aurelia of abusing her power; she slaps them both and reminds him of his place. The royal decree naming Lysander is only three days away.

During the High Rite of Ascension, assassins in black attack Aurelia in the gardens. She calls to Kaelan for help, but Seraphine clings to him, and he hesitates.

Opening excerpt

When I was seven, my father, the King, selected four sons from the Four Great Houses of the realm. They were the most handsome, the most brilliant, and they were to be raised at court as my future consorts, groomed to one day help me rule.

The people called them the “Four Lords of Eldoria.”

None of them liked me.

Even the one I adored, Lord Kaelan, had already given his heart to another.
