Story

The story

Isla has spent her life in the shadow of her sister Elara, whose incomplete mermaid bloodline leaves her skin so fragile that a single hard touch cracks it. Every hard object in the house has been removed, and every dream Isla has ever held has been sacrificed to keep Elara safe. Their brother Liam, who raised them both, insists that Isla must always be understanding.

When Elara strikes Isla for no reason and Liam blames Isla for the injury to Elara's hand, Isla is shoved aside and falls. A strange cold pain blooms across her back, and she remembers a doctor's warning: she carries the Siren's Gene, and it could manifest at any time. As her skin begins to split and blood pools around her, Isla understands that the curse was never only her sister's.

Abandoned by her family and left bleeding on the floor, Isla reaches for a door that no one will open for her.

Opening excerpt

My sister has awakened her mermaid bloodline, but it is incomplete.

Her skin is her curse. A single touch, too hard, and it cracks.

For her, everything hard in our house has been thrown away.

I love to dance, but the hard tips of ballet shoes are forbidden.
