The Tapes She Left Behind

Claire Whitman walks away from Adrian Cole in the year he has nothing, and a year later he is famous, married to Mia Sloane, and telling a late-night host that he can finally stop thinking about her. Then the host mentions the box of tapes Claire left behind before she died — every day and night of her life, filmed by her best friend Paige Henderson from the day she left him to the day she stopped breathing.

On those tapes Claire shaves her head, jokes about a little bit of cancer, and returns to her childhood home in the countryside with Paige and Biscuit, the old yellow dog. She hides her failing breath behind laughter, buries Biscuit on the hill behind the house, and begs Paige to keep filming even as her body gives out.

Adrian's smile locks into place as Claire's face fills the screen, and the perfect curtain call she entrusted to no one else begins to play.
