Story

The story

Off duty at home, a firefighter named Gavin hears the smoke alarm and rushes into his neighbor Derek's burning apartment, dragging Derek and his wife Sarah out of the inferno. The rescue costs him cuts and bruises, and in the chaos he splinters the hallway's imported cabinetry to escape the collapsing ceiling.

The next morning, police arrive at Gavin's door. Derek has filed a complaint, claiming Gavin intentionally destroyed his fifteen-thousand-dollar German cabinets and demanding full payment. Derek and Sarah repeat the accusation to the police and spread rumors through the neighborhood that Gavin is too rough to rescue anyone. Suspended from his crew pending an internal review, Gavin watches the couple rally the building's residents against him.

When Derek's father later collapses on the twenty-eighth floor with the elevator dead, Derek kneels and begs Gavin for help. Gavin looks at the stairs and answers calmly that he is too rough, and could never afford the damage.

The next day, he called the police and accused me of damaging his fifteen-thousand-dollar imported kitchen cabinet while putting out the fire, demanding I pay for it in full.

I didn’t argue and silently cooperated with the investigation.

He went around the neighborhood spreading rumors, “Aren’t firefighters supposed to be so rough? Rescuing people is so clumsy!”

A month later, his father had a sudden heart attack on the 28th floor.
