The Man She Thought Would Never Leave

On his birthday, Adrian's wife Claire says a hospital emergency keeps her away and sends him five hundred dollars. Minutes later, her young resident Evan Hayes posts a screenshot of a fifty-thousand-dollar transfer from her, congratulating him on becoming an attending. Seven years earlier, Adrian gave up a senior architect post in London to stay with Claire after her parents died, funding her medical school and residency while she promised it would one day be her turn to care for him.

That night he does not argue. He accepts the London offer he had refused three times, takes off the ring he wore for seven years, and leaves. Claire is untroubled, certain he loves her too much to stay gone. A month later she calls in tears, offering him everything if he comes home, still not understanding that he left because the woman he spent seven years lifting up had made his love feel worthless.
