Story

The story

Every Christmas Eve, Stella's stepmother Denise gives her a large, beautiful apple while her sickly half-sister Bella receives a small, bruised one. Denise asks Stella to share her health and luck with Bella, and Stella agrees. But Stella, fearing Denise's hidden beatings, secretly gives each apple to Bella. After three days, a mechanical voice announces that Stella has acquired five years of Bella's lifespan, and Denise screams in horror that Stella was not supposed to receive it.

When Bella collapses with a high fever, Denise's desperation grows. She keeps supplying the strange apples, and Stella keeps passing them to Bella, whose vitality drains away. Now, with a third apple in her hands and Bella barely conscious, Stella faces a choice: eat it herself or give it away again, while Denise's plan and the true cost of the exchange remain unclear.

Opening excerpt

My sister, Bella, who was usually the spoiled favorite, received a small, lopsided apple. When she cried and threw a tantrum, she was scolded and told to let me have the better one "just this once."

Then, my stepmother looked at me with a loving, almost hypnotic gaze. Her voice was soft, like she was coaxing a small animal into a trap.

"Stella, honey, your sister has always been in poor health. If you had the chance, would you be willing to give your health and safety to her?"
