Story
The story
Naomi has spent years waiting for Logan, her fiancé, to notice her. At dinners, he snaps the sharp tips off skewers for Cassie, a young woman new to the city, while Naomi sits before plates of chili-laden food she cannot eat. When Naomi's hand bears a scar from a pair of rusted kitchen shears he once handed her, Logan only told her to buy ointment; a splinter in Cassie's finger earns five minutes of careful tweezing.
Their wedding is next month, yet Logan keeps choosing Cassie. He cancels a long-planned visit to Naomi's parents so he can accompany Cassie on a business trip, and he reassigns their couples' scavenger hunt to her. "She's like a little sister," he insists, promising to make it up to Naomi later. On her birthday, he stayed late helping Cassie; the cake melted on the counter.
After another night alone, Naomi sends a message to a name she hasn't written to in a long time, asking whether he wants to be the groom, and books a one-way ticket for the following week. Seven days should be enough to pack up her life.
Opening excerpt
He made sure the broken, blunt ends faced outward so she could grab them easily without looking.
I sat across from them, watching in silence as Logan anticipated her every need.
"Be careful," he murmured, his eyes fixed on her. "Don't poke your lip like you did last time."
Meanwhile, the table in front of me was crowded with plates of extra-spicy wings and chili-laden dishes. There wasn’t a single thing I could eat.
Once Cassie had eaten her fill, Logan reached over and pushed her leftover skewers toward me like an act of charity.
"Go ahead and finish these. Don't let them go to waste."
