Story

The story

Reborn into a family of archetypal villains, Cassia Valerius knows the script: her corrupt father Lord Valerius, her ruthless mother, and her brother Damian, the High General, are destined for public scorn and death, all to make the heroes shine. Her only gift is a voice screaming warnings inside her head that no one else can hear.

When a royal decree offers her a choice between the Crown Prince and the Lord Marshal, Cassia sees only two death sentences, for both men love Lady Trista, the capital's celebrated literary mind. Her father's desperate refusal provokes the King into naming her the Prince's bride anyway, with Trista as his official mistress.

As Aethelgard's gossips mock her as a gilded fool, her family gathers around the dinner table. Damian proposes rebellion, her mother speaks of knives in the dark, and her father snaps his chopsticks: anyone who harms his Cassia will not live to see another dawn.

Opening excerpt

We were a family of villains, the kind that exists only to do evil, racking up a body count to make the heroes shine all the brighter.

In the end, our pre-written fate was to be left for dead on the streets, objects of public scorn.

My father was the corrupt Lord Treasurer, having siphoned off half the kingdom's treasury.
