Story

The story

In her first life, Yvie Grant gave a kidney to Susie Grant, was cast out by the Grant family when Susie died, and perished in the streets from an infected wound. She wakes as a child of five, back at the orphanage on the day the Grants were to reclaim her — but her brother Harry, who has also returned, declares she is not his sister and leaves her behind with a piece of candy.

Yvie is adopted by Carl Simpson and renamed Ruby, raised with affection by his family and becoming a celebrated surgeon and researcher. Twenty years on, Harry arrives at her hospital seeking the finest specialist for Susie, and finds Ruby instead. He warns her not to harm Susie, and she answers that she does not know him, or any Susie, at all.

What Harry takes for a grudge is only indifference — and that cuts deeper than any revenge.

Opening excerpt

I was eighteen when I donated one of my kidneys to Susie Grant, but she died to transplant rejection anyway, and I was chased out of the Grant family.

Before long, the surgery incision festered, and I died of infection in the streets.

When I opened my eyes again, I was five once more, and it was the day I was taken back to the Grant family's home.

But this time, my brother Harry stepped in front of our parents, pointing at me as he said, "There's been a mistake. She's not actually my sister."

Seeing the look of contempt in his eyes, I knew he had reincarnated too.
