We will never see each other again

In the fifth year of their marriage, Linwood Christen vanishes during an Antarctic research expedition, his body never recovered. His pregnant wife Jacquelyn collapses at his memorial, gives birth prematurely, then leaves her newborn with relatives and travels to the frozen sea, diving again and again in search of him.

Three months later she returns, broken in body, and finds her infant son covered in needle marks. Overhearing her mother-in-law and her uncle, she learns the truth: Linwood faked his death for a woman named Ruth, and has been draining his own son's blood to save Ruth's child. The uncle who comforts her is Linwood himself in disguise.

When Ruth announces her pregnancy, Linwood abandons Jacquelyn and the feverish baby without a backward glance. Holding her dying son, Jacquelyn opens a long-sealed email from a childhood friend, an invitation to a five-year secret project, and sees her only way out.
