Story

The story

In a house ruled by a father's obsession with perfect fairness, every choice between two sisters is settled by a blind draw from an antique mahogany box. Heather always draws the worst fate, while Betty always wins. When their mother, Evelyn, is diagnosed with leukemia and both daughters prove perfect bone marrow matches, their father, Richard, insists on another lottery of life and death. Betty pulls the white slip and is spared; Heather is ordered to the operating table.

Heather refuses. Her father threatens to disown her, calling her defiance blasphemy, while Betty performs tearful innocence and their mother begs her to obey. Heather challenges them to draw again, but Richard clutches the box and declares the universe has already decided, telling Heather she was born to burn out so Betty, the moon, can shine.

Then Evelyn whispers that Betty is her father's most precious secret, and Heather overhears Richard promising Betty a design school acceptance in Paris once the house is settled. With her mother fading, Heather must decide what she is willing to sacrifice.

Opening excerpt

To ensure he never showed "favoritism," every choice between my sister and me was left entirely to a blind draw. From who got to go on the middle school trip to Washington D.C., to which one of us he would help pay for college.

Somehow, I was always the one with the worst luck.

Even when my mother was diagnosed with leukemia and desperately needed a bone marrow transplant—and both my sister and I were confirmed as perfect matches—he still brought out that antique mahogany humidor. He forced us into a "fair" lottery of life and death.
