The Gentle Lie

A woman once wished only to give Anson a complete family. She braved the pain of childbirth, but a midwife's error left her mind broken, unable to count or care for herself. Anson refused to let the family fall apart, cradling their baby in one arm while wiping crumbs from her mouth with the other, and worked himself gray by thirty to pay her medical bills.

Then his patience snapped. After one spilled glass of milk, he shoved her down and demanded to know why she had survived. The next morning he called Mrs. Davis about a woman named Mindy, who soon moved in as a nanny. Leo adored her; Anson's eyes softened for her. When Mindy claimed Sasha bit and hit her, Anson slapped Sasha and locked her in the dark wardrobe, and Leo called another woman Mommy.

As Mindy's belly swelled, she accused Sasha of endangering the baby. Anson backed Sasha into the storage room, and the lock clicked from the outside.
