Too Late for Next Time

Chloe comes home from a three-day business trip to find Logan's shoes strewn across the entryway and the apartment in chaos. She had asked him to wash the dishes, hang the laundry and throw out the takeout boxes. He is lost in his video game, promising "next time" as he always does. When she says they should break up, Logan insists he never cheated, never gambled and shares his paycheck, so the mess is nothing.

Chloe packs her suitcase. Every grievance sounds petty when spoken aloud, yet the memories pile up: the fever she rode out alone while he slept, the chores done halfway, the promises made while he was courting her. Logan's friend Mason tells him to pull his weight, but Logan only complains that Chloe nags.

At her parents' home, Chloe asks her mother why she chose her father. Her mother recalls a handsome suitor who kept tapping ashes into her flower pots, and the man who brought her planters and tended her flowers. Watching her father carry in a watermelon he pretended to find by chance, Chloe understands what care looks like.
