I’m Inferior to My Sister-in-Law in Every Way

A month before her thirty-fifth birthday, a woman learns she is to inherit one million dollars from her late parents. Before she can share the news with her husband, Mark, he tells her she is an embarrassment to him, that her cooking and mothering cannot compare to Claire, his widowed sister-in-law who lives with them and whom he allowed to attend their daughter Lia's parent-teacher conference in her place, wearing her mother's necklace.

When she finally breaks and ruins the family picnic, Mark slaps her and orders her out. His parents watch in silence, and Claire offers soothing words that only sharpen the wound. She realizes she has always been the outsider in this house, kept as an unpaid maid while being compared to a woman she can never match.

So she lets go, handing Claire the household duties, taking back her dowry bracelet and the radio she bought, and walking away from the family that never saw her.
