Another Life, Another Favor

Elara returns to the past, and so does Aiden Mitchell. In their last life he brought her home from the orphanage; she was his foster sister, then his wife, and they grew old together. This time, as the Mitchells wave for her to come home, a teenage Aiden blocks their view and chooses the girl beside her instead — Chloe, the Hawthornes' foster daughter who died young in their past life. He blames Elara for Chloe's death and vows she will suffer what Chloe went through.

Left behind, Elara accepts Mrs. Hawthorne's offer and becomes Elara Hawthorne. At the cold Hawthorne estate she meets Charlotte, the silent boy who will one day head the family's empire, and throws herself into relentless lessons in deportment, dance and riding, seeing the old-money household as a chance to climb higher.

When Aiden and Chloe appear again, a familiar pendant at Chloe's neck catches Elara's eye — and Aiden realizes his mistake.
