Story

The story

Chloe's terminally ill mother endures a twenty-hour bus ride to attend her wedding to Ethan, only for Ethan to abandon the ceremony when his childhood sweetheart Sophia threatens suicide. As her mother collapses, Ethan refuses to help, then takes the dying woman's wheelchair for Sophia, who trips Chloe as she carries her mother on her back. The ambulance arrives too late; her mother dies in the emergency room.

Ethan arrives afterward, oblivious, praising Chloe for being understanding and promising the next wedding will go smoothly. He does not know her mother is gone, or that Chloe has decided to leave once the debt between them is settled.

While Chloe arranges the cremation and packs her mother's belongings, Ethan sends two more wedding dresses through the bridal shop.

Opening excerpt

My mom, terminal with cancer, sat in a wheelchair with an oxygen tank, having endured a grueling twenty-hour Greyhound bus ride just to be at my wedding to Ethan.

But when it was his time to walk down the aisle, I called his name until I was hoarse, but he was nowhere in sight.

Turns out, his childhood sweetheart, Sophia, was having a depressive episode, threatening suicide again:
