Pout or Suicide? My Brother’s Mad Regret

Two days after Nina runs away from home, her brother Jake finds her at a hospital entrance and drags her back, furious that she left after he slapped her. She returns in silence, ready to play the sensible sister, giving away everything she owns to Sophie and never shedding another tear. Jake believes she is sullen, testing how long she can keep up the act. He does not know that the slap deafened one ear and led to a diagnosis of leukemia, and that she has stopped hoping.

On New Year's Eve, Jake celebrates with Sophie using money from a savings card their grandmother left Nina for her wedding. When Jake later finds her pill bottle, he accuses her of using drugs, and Sophie's story has already poisoned his mind. Nina insists the powder was swapped into her leukemia medication, but Jake slaps her again and forbids her from going anywhere or eating anything unchecked. Defenseless, she reaches for her phone.
