The Brothers Who Let Me Burn

A gas leak sets the family home alight, and Freya Fontaine is trapped as the flames close in. Her oldest brother Stellan, the fire chief, sends the ladder to their adopted sister Piper Prescott's window instead, and her second brother Garrett's helicopter carries Piper away while Freya waits for an ambulance. At the hospital, her third brother Weston, the attending physician, makes her check in and wait her turn.

What none of them remember is that Freya's lungs were already damaged. A childhood fire left her with burns to her airway, and last year she was diagnosed with early-stage lung adenocarcinoma and lost part of a lobe. Smoke is something her body cannot survive.

As the brothers fuss over Piper, Freya lies in the hallway slowly suffocating, unable to make a sound. Only when a nurse questions Weston's orders does the truth begin to surface, and by then Freya has one faint word left.
