Story

The story

Seven-year-old Mia watches her father, Michael Carter, dive into the river to save a drowning man. The man, Derek Lawson, swims ashore unharmed and walks away, and Michael is pulled out blue and lifeless. A year later, Mia's mother collapses from exhaustion and dies, and her grandmother blames herself every spring.

Then Mia wakes as a seven-year-old again, back at the riverbank. When her father moves to save the struggling figure, she darts past him and jumps in, though she cannot swim. Michael dives after her, but underwater Derek grabs his ankle and drags him down, trying to drown the man who came to save him. Michael kicks free and hauls Mia to shore.

On the bank, Derek turns the crowd against them, and an edited video brands Michael a cold-blooded father. Suspended from work and hounded at home, Michael is left shaking, while Mia knows Derek staged it all.

Opening excerpt

By the time a crowd had gathered and Dad was pulled from the water, his body had turned blue. He wasn't breathing.

And the grown man Dad had risked his life to save?

He swam back to shore on his own, shook off the water, muttered, "Just my luck," and walked away.

Mom never smiled again after that. She worked three jobs to keep our family afloat.

A year later, she collapsed from exhaustion at the textile mill and never woke up.

Every spring, Grandma took me to visit their graves.

She would cry and say the same thing every year.
