Story

The story

Cassie and Jake Sanders left their hometown for a city life and returned in glory. Cassie opens the vat of wine she brewed 28 years ago for her future husband, but at the town celebration she hears Jake tell his friends he has chosen Erica Jones instead, and that Cassie will never leave him. When the ceremony comes, Jake drinks Erica's wine before the whole town, and Erica claims him as her fiancé in name. Nina Coleson, furious, defends Cassie, while Erica proposes a rock-paper-scissors game for Jake's choice and asks him to pray for a child at the church.

Jake agrees and goes up the mountain with Erica, forgetting Cassie's birthday. He later returns home with a gift, as he always does after such incidents, but Cassie has already replied to a yearly message asking for her hand. The vat bearing her name waits in the family home, and the town's customs demand a reckoning.

Opening excerpt

Back in my hometown, the women would brew wine at a young age for their future husbands.

Since college, Jake Sanders and I had left our hometown for a brighter future in a city far away, and we finally returned in glory.

I was finally able to open my vat of wine, which had been kept for 28 years. I knew that Jake was quite particular about hygiene, so I changed my wine to store-bought wine during the town celebration, even though I knew it was taboo.
