Story
The story
Three years after Kyle Johnston died in a car crash, his wife Stella Porter storms into his mother's house demanding a divorce so she can marry her dying ex, Harvey Arden. When his mother insists Kyle is dead, Stella refuses to believe it, threatening to cut off the old woman's medical support unless he signs the papers.
Stella searches Avenquay for Kyle, convinced he is hiding to avoid the divorce. Only his mother knows the truth: she stopped taking Stella's money long ago and has been holding on, waiting for Stella to learn what really happened.
When Stella's assistant finally finds Kyle's hospital records, her hands begin to tremble.
Opening excerpt
She stormed into my old house like she owned the place, forcing me to sign the divorce agreement.
Mom told her the truth—I was already gone.
Stella rolled her eyes. "Why's he still pretending? Harvey's dying. I just wanna be there for him. What's so wrong about that? If he won't come out, I'm done paying your medical bills."
She thought threatening Mom would shake something loose.
