Story
The story
When her family goes bankrupt, Clara Evans drags her father back from the rooftop and accepts Lucien Reed's proposal, demanding two million dollars as a dowry. He agrees, but the marriage turns cold: he brings his young mistress home, throws their prenuptial agreement in her face, and calls her a gold-digger who sold herself to him.
Cut off from earning any money of her own, Clara must beg Lucien for every cent. When a threatened miscarriage leaves her medical bill short by exactly fourteen dollars, he sends that precise amount with a note to buy her medicine and not disgrace the Reed name. Unable to afford the abortion, she borrows from old friends, only to be mocked, and endures the procedure awake without a pain pump.
Walking home past fireworks Lucien arranged for another woman, Clara returns to find him with Maya, who demands a candy apple. Money, love, and Lucien—she wants none of it.
Opening excerpt
The day my family went bankrupt, I dragged my father back from the rooftop. Turning around, I accepted Lucien’s proposal, but for the dowry, I demanded two million dollars. He was silent for three seconds, then chuckled, “Deal.”
Yet, barely half a year into our marriage, he brought his young mistress home. Before I could even react, he tossed our prenuptial agreement in my face.
