Rejecting The Heroine Loyalty Test

The week before move-in day at Preston University, Travis is messaged in the incoming freshman Discord server by Emma, a sophomore whose charming notes and golden-hour photos hold his attention all summer. Two days before orientation she sets a meeting at The Roasted Bean on College Ave, promising to see whether he looks as good in person as he does on her lock screen.

At the cafe the girl waiting in the corner booth resembles nothing in those photos, and when she stammers out a plea to be his boyfriend, a translucent string of glowing text scrolls through his vision: the real female lead is hiding in the back booth, and this is a loyalty test he is expected to pass. Travis refuses to perform. He turns the stranger down flat, then faces Emma herself when she storms out to defend her roommate and lecture him on superficiality.

With the invisible crowd demanding he apologize and embrace her, Travis stands his ground, unwilling to be scripted into someone else's romance.
