Story

The story

At court, the King's most favored mistress has everything except an heir. When she lifts the fertility tonic prepared by Doctor Rose Saylon, glowing words appear in the air, calling themselves comments. They claim the physician is the King's hidden love, that the tonic is slow poison, and that every night the King "visits" her, she is drugged while his guard Connor Browning takes his place.

Rather than rage, she resolves to act. She tips the tonic into her sleeve, has it tested, and learns the fish that drank it are dead. She summons Connor, whose sister depends on Royal Infirmary medicine, and offers him a choice: her protection, and his loyalty to her alone. He kneels.

She then asks who Rose Saylon truly is, and Connor tells of Vosvale, Summerton, and a blade taken for the King.

I was the King's most favored mistress — more indulged than any other woman at court. And yet, after all this time, I still hadn't given him an heir.

That day, just as I lifted the fertility tonic Doctor Rose Saylon had prepared for me to my lips, a string of glowing text appeared out of nowhere, hanging in the air in front of me.
