Story
The story
Nathan and his young daughter Hannah are kidnapped and killed in a cold, abandoned factory. In his final moments, Nathan begs his captor to let him make one last call to his wife, Sabrina, pleading for rescue. But Sabrina, busy drying the hair of Julian—the man she loves—dismisses it as another act. She accuses Nathan of pushing Julian down the stairs and breaking his arm, then hangs up. Right after, they are killed.
Now, as weightless souls, Nathan and Hannah watch Sabrina dote on Julian in a hospital room. She feeds him soup, gives him Nathan's priceless guitar, and plans to move him into the master bedroom. She ignores her butler Charles's warnings that Nathan and Hannah have been missing for days, convinced it is a trick. Nathan's rage and sorrow grow as he sees the depth of her hatred for him and her indifference to their daughter.
When Sabrina finally returns home and asks for Nathan, she learns from the housekeeper Mrs. Gable that he and Hannah have not been back for a week. The truth of their deaths looms, and Sabrina's world is about to shatter.
Opening excerpt
Before the end, I begged our kidnapper to let me make one last call to my wife, to plead with her to save us.
But she thought I was putting on an act. Her voice crackled with annoyance through the phone.
"Are you ever going to stop?" she snarled. "I haven't even dealt with you for pushing Julian down the stairs and breaking his arm! Go ahead and die for all I care, just stop bothering me while I'm drying his hair!"
