Story

The story

Ten years after Amy Ashwood was brought back from the countryside to replace her runaway sister Livia in an arranged marriage, Livia returns home and declares that the stand-in can leave. Amy has spent that decade enduring Adrian Thorne's coldness, his family's cruelty, two lost pregnancies and a kidnapping, while Livia traveled the world freely.

When Livia calls Adrian and asks him to come to her, he leaves Amy to spend the night elsewhere. Amy's parents urge her to give her sister time, reminding her that they once sent her away without listening to her side. Adrian defends Livia and blames Amy for keeping a wall between them.

After a sleepless night, Amy drafts a divorce agreement. When Adrian calls in the morning with Livia's voice chirping in the background, Amy tells him she is not interested.

Ten years after I took her place, the prodigal daughter who had been off enjoying the world finally came home.

She was still as carefree and whimsical as she’d been a decade ago. She handed Adrian Thorne, now a man of thirty-two, a wishing bottle filled with sand as a gift.

“Every grain of sand in here,” she said, her voice breathy, “represents a day I missed you.”
