Story

The story

Julian, who has always hated cats, suddenly brings home a dirty stray. Chloe is touched, believing he did it for her, and spends six months caring for the delicate, bad-tempered Sweetie, who scratches her and refuses her affection. When Julian's college upperclassman Mia returns from abroad, the cat leaps straight into her arms, and Chloe learns Sweetie was never hers.

Mia calls Julian "Daddy" and asks whether he treated Sweetie well. Julian insists he only asked Chloe to look after the cat, not to give it away, and introduces her as his girlfriend. When Chloe later kicks over the cat bowl in frustration, Mia shoves her to the floor and demands an apology. Julian orders Chloe to apologize, his eyes cold and indifferent.

Something in Chloe finally snaps. She refuses, and for the first time stands up to him.

Opening excerpt

My boyfriend, who had always hated cats, brought one home.

I thought he did it to make me happy and was touched for a long time.

Until six months later.

Julian's college upperclassman returned from abroad.

The first thing she did was open her arms to Julian.

"Julian, I'm back."

The second thing she did was call out to the cat in my arms: "Sweetie, come here, Mommy's back..."

Upon hearing her voice, Sweetie immediately jumped out of my arms.
