Story

The story

Captain Eva Rostova has hunted the serial killer Walter Crane for ten years, ever since his "Vanishing Girls" case scarred the country. When a dismembered young woman is pulled from a septic tank, Eva recognizes Crane's signature at once: he never leaves his victims' eyes intact. She forms a task force and vows to identify the body fast.

What Eva cannot see is that the victim is her own daughter, Chloe. Chloe's ghost stands beside her mother in the morgue, listening as Eva dismisses her as a selfish, manipulative parasite and threatens to disown her if she refuses to be her cousin Lily's maid of honor. Eva never notices the scar on the ankle before her, or that the daughter she despises is the woman on the steel table.

As another father reports a missing daughter, Eva's contempt for Chloe collides with the truth she refuses to recognize.
