Story

The story

The night before the President's Fellowship defense, Ryan overhears Garrett and Gina in the lab: Garrett has copied all of Ryan's data and wiped his local drive so Gina can present it as her own. But Ryan checks his private server and realizes Garrett stole only v0.3, a scrapped build from eleven weeks ago, riddled with three hundred and twenty-seven bugs and filled with mocking code comments aimed at Garrett.

Ryan tells his roommate Wyatt, who is stunned by his calm. Ryan plans to present as normal, letting Gina face the committee with broken code. Professor Harrison, who supervised Ryan's undergraduate capstone, sits on the panel and knows Ryan's coding style like a fingerprint.

On the morning of November 16th, the defense begins in the Science Hall lecture hall. Ryan has done nothing to stop the theft. He only has to wait.

Opening excerpt

I stood in the hallway, frozen for three seconds.

Then I pulled out my phone and checked the local Git logs. Last push: three months ago.

I slid my phone back into my pocket. That version had three hundred and twenty-seven bugs. And the comments were absolutely loaded with my warmest regards for Garrett.

Tomorrow's defense was going to be a masterpiece.
