Story

The story

After a car accident leaves Ethan bleeding out, his mother, the hospital's Chief of Staff, sends every surgeon to his brother Caleb's room for a few scratches. She ignores Ethan's pleas, and he dies alone in a corner of the ER. His spirit drifts to his mother's side, tethered and invisible, as his family gathers around Caleb, who pretends to be badly hurt and twists the story so they blame Ethan for the crash.

As his mother calls his phone again and again, a nurse answers over his cooling body, but she hears only her mother's insults. His father rages, his sister Sarah sneers, and his girlfriend Bella turns to Caleb. Even in death, Ethan can only watch the family that never wanted him.

Opening excerpt

My heart was ruptured, and I needed immediate surgery.

But my mother, the hospital's Chief of Staff, ordered every available surgeon to my brother’s room. He had a few scratches. I was bleeding out.

I begged her to save me. She didn't even look at me.

"Stop trying to be the center of attention, Ethan! Do you realize your brother almost broke a bone?"

In the end, I died in a corner of the ER, unnoticed and alone.

But when she finally found out I was gone, the mother who hated me the most lost her mind.
