Story
The story
An hour into Gina’s graduation dinner, David still hasn’t arrived. Every call goes unanswered, and Gina sits frozen over a speech thanking her parents. Stepping into the next banquet hall, her mother finds him beside Cynthia, his widowed first love, arm around her waist, applauding as Cynthia’s son Cody calls them Mom and Dad.
She returns to Gina and tells her to speak her own way. Gina thanks only her mother. David’s relatives sneer that she is ungrateful, but Gina asks where her father is. Outside, David walks out hand-in-hand with Cynthia and tells a teacher he does not know Gina. At home he calls it support for Cody, then warns Gina not to be petty.
The next morning a divorce agreement waits. Cynthia and Cody arrive to apologize, and Cody raises a fist.
Opening excerpt
The dozens of calls I’d made to him had all been declined, and the only response to my text messages was a cold, automated reply: "On my way."
Gina stood up and sat back down five times, her head lowered, her fingers nervously pleating the hem of her dress. She was staring at her speech, utterly paralyzed by the line: "I want to thank my parents."
