Story
The story
Ethan served three years in prison for his wife, Ava Deveaux. On his release, her company's launch bonus turns out to be a single dollar bill, while his colleague Leo Vance receives ten million. Ava then demands their marriage stay secret, ordering Ethan to call her Ms. Deveaux at the office and handing the department manager role she once promised him to Leo instead.
Ethan signs her secret marriage agreement and watches Ava and Leo grow closer, sharing couple's photos and private moments. When he quietly clears his desk of their keepsakes, Ava's anger only deepens his resolve, and he has divorce papers drawn up.
Ava signs without reading, then orders Ethan to a client dinner to block drinks for Leo. What will Ethan do with the freedom he has finally chosen?
Opening excerpt
I did three years in prison for my wife, Ava Deveaux. When I got out, my "launch party" bonus for her new company was a single dollar bill.
For a second, I thought it was a mistake. But then I saw my colleague, Leo Vance, open his envelope. He got a single bill, too. Relief washed over me, and I spent the rest of the day happily helping Ava with the grand opening.
That night, though, I was scrolling through social media when I saw Leo’s latest post. It was a picture of a check.
