Story

The story

At City Hall, Ava waits in a white dress and a ring for Blake, the man who has proposed to her seven times. But Blake never comes to marry her. He arrives with Chloe, his childhood friend, and a swarm of drones that broadcast Ava's humiliation across the city. It was all a social experiment for Chloe's story, and Blake's friends laugh as he calls Ava desperate, mocking her bankrupt family and her jailed father.

When Blake tries to pawn her off on Gus, one of his cronies, Ava refuses and declares that her real fiancé is on his way. She has already called Ethan Grant, Blake's sworn enemy, who agrees to meet her before City Hall closes. As the drones and the live chat mock her, Ava smiles and thanks the crowd for coming to her wedding, while Blake taunts her to name the man who will actually show up.

Opening excerpt

I waited from sunrise to sunset at City Hall, a bride with no groom, only to find my humiliation broadcast across the city by a swarm of drones.

I saw him then, his arm slung around Chloe, his childhood friend. He gestured back at me, a smirk playing on his lips as he addressed their friends.

“See? Told you she’d do whatever I say. Pay up. A hundred bucks each.”

Then his eyes, full of a familiar, malicious glint, found mine.

“Ava, it’s just a joke. You’re not mad, are you?” he called out, his voice dripping with false concern.
