Story

The story

Chloe has been married to Julian for five years, and after three agonizing rounds of IVF, she is finally pregnant. But two months in, she is hospitalized for complications — and begins to hear a malicious, infantile voice coming from inside her own stomach, a fetus that taunts her and calls her only the delivery van.

In the hallway she overhears Julian telling her doctor the truth: the baby is not hers. It is for Serena Vane, an A-list star whose reputation cannot bear a baby bump, and Julian orders the pregnancy continued even though it may leave Chloe infertile. He hides it from her, feeds her folate she is severely allergic to, and watches her every move as Serena visits, kisses him, and reveals a two-year affair.

Trapped in a body that is not her own, Chloe resolves to get the thing out of her — while Julian installs a maternity nurse, Mrs. Vance, to keep her in line.

Opening excerpt

We’d been married for five years. My husband, Julian, had always been militant about protection, so I was stunned when he suddenly wanted a child.

Two months into the pregnancy, I was hospitalized for complications. That’s when I first heard the voice. It was malicious, infantile, and coming from inside my own stomach.
