Story

The story

Natalie Channing is the only daughter of Victor and Elizabeth Channing, owners of Channing Enterprises. She and her younger brother Wesley grew up under the care of their live-in nanny, Margaret Harper, whose daughter Riley Harper has shared their home since childhood. Lately Riley has grown strange: she glares at Natalie with contempt, plays videos about switched heiresses, and asks when the Channings will return.

Riley's behavior escalates. She steals Wesley's laundry, hovers outside his study, and at dinner asks whether she and Wesley look alike. Margaret slaps her and calls her ungrateful, but Riley storms off vowing they will regret it. At Fairfield Academy, dressed in designer clothes, Riley hints that what is meant to be hers will be hers, while classmates whisper about a possible switch.

When Natalie finally confronts her, Riley insists she is the rightful Channing heiress and that Natalie owes her eighteen years. Natalie demands proof.

Opening excerpt

Our live-in nanny’s daughter has been acting a little strange lately.

She keeps giving me these hateful looks—subtle, but definitely there—and blaring her phone in the living room with videos about “switched heiresses.”

My brother, Wesley, couldn’t take it anymore and came to complain.

“Natalie, do you think Riley Harper has convinced herself that you and she were switched at birth?”

“She’s been looking at me with these weird, ‘maternal’ eyes, and honestly, it’s freaking me out.”
