Story

The story

Dr. Thomas Aris arrives at a locked-down hospital carrying a titanium cooler of synthesized serum, the culmination of seven years of work and the only cure for thirty-six critical patients drowning in their own fluids. Before he can reach the doors, his apprentice Kate collapses and accuses him of carrying the poison, claiming he intends a secondary release inside.

Armed officers surround him. Kate twists every word, telling Captain Brody that Aris bragged of dosing the children in the ward, that his reagents are dark-web neurotoxins meant for the water grid. When the cooler is breached and the vials shatter, the serum begins to degrade, and Aris is dragged to the precinct as the only person who knows the protocol to administer it.

With twenty-seven minutes until total organ failure, Kate promises to watch his life burn to ash.

Opening excerpt

They said there was a highly corrosive, toxic leak inside. They ordered all unauthorized personnel to clear the area immediately.

I was just opening my mouth to declare my credentials when my apprentice suddenly collapsed onto the concrete, pointing a shaking finger directly at me. Her scream tore through the frigid air.

She told them the source of the poison was in my bag. She shrieked that I was about to go inside and initiate a secondary release, begging the police to arrest me before it was too late.
