Story

The story

Gloria wakes on the first day of the semester in Davenport Hall, Suite 503, remembering a past life in which her roommate Sienna's crusade against air conditioning ended in her own fatal cardiogenic shock. Sienna hides the thermostat key and forbids AC or box fans, calling the heat a spiritual discipline and herself a servant of Mother Nature.

This time Gloria takes her medical records to Dean Gable and asks for a single room, citing severe myocardial ischemia that extreme heat can trigger into cardiogenic shock. Sienna follows, clutching the key and weeping about melting glaciers and poisoned rivers, and onlookers side with her good intentions while Gloria's request stalls in paperwork.

Gloria refuses to sleep in the room until it is approved, and when Gable summons the dorm warden, Sienna has already cut the AC unit's power cord with heavy-duty scissors.

Opening excerpt

My roommate was a self-proclaimed eco-savior.

In the dead of a sweltering hundred-degree summer, she locked the thermostat cover and hid the key.

"Everyone sweats in July. Just suck it up and consider it your contribution to saving the planet."

That night, not a single breeze cut through the stifling air. Our dorm room was a literal oven.

My head throbbed, sweat pouring off me in waves.

When I tried to find the key, she climbed onto a chair and snipped the power cord to the AC unit.
