Her Peeping Accusation, My Prosthetic Eye

When a college student across the hall accuses Lucas Rochester of spying on her in the shower, the neighbors are quick to condemn him as a pervert. Facing a barrage of insults, he removes his sunglasses to reveal two hollow eye sockets, the scars of a fire three years ago. How, he asks, can a blind man spy on anyone?

Detective Miller is unmoved, insisting a hospital examination will prove whether Lucas is truly blind. The accuser, Amy Lestat, wails that he is lying, and the crowd's fury only grows. Lucas is taken to the station, where Miller presses him to confess, warning of pressure from above and hinting at ways to make him talk.

Locked in a holding cell, Lucas hears the officers' contempt. Then Miller returns with a triumphant smile, holding a pair of military-grade binoculars and a camera full of candid photos of Amy, both supposedly found under Lucas's windowsill. Lucas stays silent, knowing he has fallen into a carefully prepared trap.
