Story

The story

A young woman boards Express Train G404 on New Year's Eve, determined to prove she is not insane. Once before, she rode this train and watched every passenger vanish; the railway insisted the blizzard had canceled the service, and she woke in a psychiatric hospital, where doctors drugged and shocked her until she threw herself from a tenth-floor window. Now she is back on the same day, in Car 05, Seat 12F, beside a laborer peeling an orange. She films the crowded carriage, sends the clip to her family, and resolves to stay awake and gather proof.

Then the train enters a tunnel. Pressure crushes the car, the lights fail, and when they return, every passenger is gone. The carriage is spotless, the blizzard outside has become a colorless gray void, and the intercom answers only static. When she finally reaches her mother by phone, her mother insists the train was canceled and that stranded ticket-holders are at the station seeking refunds.

She has a ticket, a video and a GPS trail. The train keeps moving, and she means to learn the truth even if it kills her.

Opening excerpt

The express train pulled out of the station. I’d just come back from the restroom, and over a thousand passengers had vanished.

I refused to believe it, frantically dialing the station’s help line. The agent on the phone insisted that due to a severe blizzard, Express Train G404 had been canceled. It never left the station.

But I was sitting right there, in the warmth of a first-class seat.
