Story
The story
Every year on her birthday, an eight-year-old girl must kneel all day before her mother's tombstone. Her mother died of an amniotic fluid embolism the day she was born, and her father and grandparents have treated her ever since as the culprit who killed her. Her father, once devoted to her mother, now cannot look at her without hatred.
A doctor has told the girl she has a serious illness; her stomach will hurt constantly until she dies. With little time left, she cleans the house, buys groceries with her saved pocket money, and secretly buys her first birthday cake. When her father comes home smelling of alcohol, he knocks the cake to the floor and strikes her, then sends her back out into the falling snow to kneel at the grave.
Kneeling in the cold, she talks to her mother's photo, apologizing and wondering whether her mother blames her too. Then blood bursts from her mouth onto the snow.

Every year, on that day, I had to kneel before my mother’s grave for an entire day.
Mom died from an amniotic fluid embolism, the very day she gave birth to me. From then on, I became the family’s culprit.
Dad hated me. My grandparents never gave me a kind look. They all said I was the one who killed Mom.
On my eighth birthday, I cautiously tugged at Dad’s sleeve, speaking in a small voice, “Dad, I feel so unwell today. Can I… not go to Mom’s grave?”
