Hazel has spent years making a sleep balm from the leaves of an old camphor tree, the only remedy that eases her billionaire husband Charles Lennon’s chronic insomnia. On the night of their seventh wedding anniversary, his childhood sweetheart Sharon Simpson pours scalding water over the tree, and Charles has Hazel tied to its trunk instead, leaving her wrists badly damaged. When he later offers to buy an estate as an apology, Hazel asks for a divorce, and Charles refuses to take her seriously.

As Charles keeps siding with Sharon, Hazel hires the lawyer Albert Moore and files for divorce herself. The nerve damage to her hands may end her painting, yet the sleep balm formula she gave the hospital has passed clinical testing. Charles still believes she is being unreasonable, while Sharon’s presence shadows her every step.
