Story

The story

Maeve believed she was the luckiest woman alive despite her breast cancer and her daughter Lark's blindness in one eye, because her gentle doctor husband Declan never left her side. On the day of her mastectomy, she overhears Declan and his assistant in the consultation room: she is not sick at all, and Lark was never blind—Declan took one of the child's corneas at birth to give to Celeste's daughter, and plans to take the other next week. Declan laughs that Maeve will soon be a woman with one breast and a blind daughter, too late to beg him to stay.

Maeve quietly cancels the surgery with Dr. Gideon, the oncologist who had long insisted her tests were normal. She asks him to help her stage a fake operation, and when she wakes in bandages, Declan and Celeste visit—Celeste smug, Declan declaring he prefers her. Maeve says nothing, but vows their good days are numbered.

Discharged early, she returns to Lark, who begs her parents to attend tomorrow's school play. Maeve promises to come and calls Declan, only to meet his impatience. The trap she has set is only beginning.
