Story
The story
After a miscarriage, Aria learns to stop asking questions. She no longer waits for Nathan to come home, no longer objects to his vacations with her best friend Sophia, and no longer reacts when she finds used condoms in his car. She has become the reasonable wife he always wanted, though he does not know that in the years she was unreasonable, she was also the one who truly loved him.
At the Hawthorne family estate on Christmas Eve, Sophia plays hostess in an apron while Nathan's mother warns Aria not to make a scene. Sophia's son Max charges at Aria, calling her the bad lady. Aria stays calm, but the child she never got to meet still aches inside her. She remembers how she once stood by Nathan through bankruptcy and his father's death, and how he swore at their wedding he would never let her down.
Now Nathan promises to end things with Sophia after the holidays, but Aria has stopped believing him. A missing hundred thousand dollars and a diamond ring for a new secretary named Ms. Cole leave her with nothing left to feel.
Opening excerpt
1
The miscarriage taught me how to behave.
I stopped asking when Nathan would be home. I didn’t question his vacations with my best friend. I didn’t even mind when he started playing dad to her son.
Even now, as I found a handful of used condoms on the floor of his car, my expression didn’t change. I simply swept them into a trash bag.
