The Billionaire's Test

For three years Julian pretended to be poor, letting Amy work two jobs and deliver food to support him, then revealed he was one of the richest men in the city and called it a test she had passed. After a plane crash hoax and a month of fireworks, she married him.

In their fourth year, Julian takes a young, delicate mistress and hides nothing. At their anniversary party the girl wears the same pearl necklace as Amy, and when Amy tears it off and throws it at him, he only asks whether she wants to make a scene. She has no capital to: her father's lung cancer treatment, the hospital, the doctors, the fees, her whole comfortable life all come from Julian. When the girl falls, Julian shoves Amy into a champagne tower and leaves with her, telling Amy to stop embarrassing herself.

At the hospital her father sees her cuts and warns her that relying too much on someone leads to disrespect, and that she should find work and her own ground to stand on.
