Story

The story

On the night she is to be invested as Commander of the Dragon Rider Corps, a young woman is chained in the basement with anti-magic iron so that her sister Lina's coming-of-age ceremony will not be overshadowed. While her family celebrates upstairs, dragon hunters break in and carve out her heart. Her spirit rises from her body and watches, unseen, as her brother, mother and father dismiss her silence as sulking and her distress link as a tantrum, refusing to open the door.

Only Lina's words reach her: a message urging her to die so that no one will compete for their parents' attention, retracted before anyone else can see it. Her seat at the table is gone, her room is to become a walk-in closet, and a gift she once bought for Lina is turned into a curse stone in her name.

Unheard and unable to touch anything, she follows her family through the house, waiting for one of them to look down the thirteen steps.

Opening excerpt

Tonight was the night I was to be invested as Commander of the Dragon Rider Corps. It was also my sister's coming-of-age ceremony.

But my mother was afraid my investiture would steal my sister's spotlight. So she had my brother lock me in the basement with anti-magic chains.

They said they'd make it up to me after Lina's celebration was over.
