Story

The story

Jane Lawson is the illegitimate daughter the Lawsons keep hidden, despised by her brother Ken for eyes that mirror her mother's. After a Christmas quarrel over a cushion her mother made, Ken slaps her and sends her to a convent, where nuns strap her to a bench and drag her to a stream until she nearly drowns. Three years later he brings her home to earn good karma for her adopted sister, Anne.

Jane returns hollow and unsteady, dizzy and vomiting at sudden movement, and Ken reads it all as a disgusting act. Anne's innocent kindnesses, a plate of bloody beef, a remembered accusation, each set off Jane's terror of being sent back to the mountain. Bloodied and kneeling in the cold chapel, she clutches her throbbing head, certain only that she cannot go back.

Opening excerpt

During a family Christmas gathering, I shoved my adopted sister, Anne Lawson, away when she tried to use the cushion my mother had made for me.

Ken slapped me across the face. "You’re so young, yet you're already as vicious as your mother. What can you two do besides steal and get into fights?

“You little tramp! Keeping you in this family is asking for trouble.
