Story
The story
On her wedding day, Nora Hale waits in a hired old carriage while her fiancé, Adrian Blackwood, gives the flower-strewn limousine to his childhood sweetheart, Vivian Mercer, so she can experience being a bride. He tells Nora another car will be arranged for her, removes her hand from the door, and rides away without looking back. Left alone, Nora tells the coachman she is not going in and asks him to turn around.
A servant then relays Adrian's instructions: the procession has been sped up, Vivian does not like being overshadowed, and Nora should enter later through the side door by the kitchen so the guests never see two brides together. From the carriage she hears Adrian's friends and cousin mock her years at his side, and watches him kneel to tie Vivian's shoelace, a courtesy he once refused her.
Nora smooths her crumpled skirt and decides she no longer wants this wedding at all.
