Story
The story
Eli has spent two years loving Quinn in secret, pretending to be strangers so she can keep her pristine image with the squad. As the volleyball team's student equipment manager, he has endured her public coldness without complaint. When he offers Quinn her favourite electrolyte water after a winning scrimmage, she ignores him, takes Asher's bottle instead, and throws Eli's into the trash.
Bridget, the team captain, defends him, but Asher and Quinn turn the moment against Eli, hinting he might have tampered with the drink. Then Quinn reveals she has brought Asher onto the staff as a second student manager, and an email confirms Eli's role for the regional tournament has been handed to Asher. Left to bag the loose volleyballs, Eli reaches the van last and finds it full, with Quinn and Asher seated close together.
With his place on the team slipping away and Quinn's voice telling the last one to the curb to order an Uber, Eli must decide how much more of this silence he can bear.
Opening excerpt
We had won in four sets, and as the bench cleared, both Asher and I stepped toward Quinn at the exact same second, drinks in hand.
I held the specific brand of electrolyte water she always drank—grapefruit, chilled just enough to bead with condensation.
