Story
The story
Everyone calls Landon the gold standard of devotion, and Eden has always believed it. Born without any sense of direction, she has leaned on him for five years, trusting the maps, pins and smartwatch he supplies to guide her to his side. Yet each time he meets her former best friend Tara, the directions he sends leave Eden stranded far from the real destination.
Today Eden takes a cab to the private athletic club and arrives on her own. Outside the pool she overhears Landon's friend Brett and her own younger brother Toby laughing about the dropped pin that sent her to the harbor, and about the heavy lifting that keeps her out of Landon's hair. The roads were never confusing; Landon simply never gave her the true address.
When Landon finds her, he calls it a joke and demands she apologize to Tara. Then he threatens to have her late father's structural design patent filed under Tara's name. Eden hurls the smartwatch into the pool, but the people she once trusted most are still closing in.
Opening excerpt
Everyone told me how lucky I was to have Landon.
In a world full of men who strayed in the shadows, Landon was hailed as the gold standard of devotion. Whenever he crossed paths with another woman, he made a point of calling me immediately, insisting I join them. He wanted no secrets. He wanted me by his side.
